Three Tips to Keep Your Preschooler Healthy This Winter

1. Regular Hand Washing

Regular hand washing is undoubtedly the best way to keep the germs at bay.  Teach your child how to wash with soap and warm water. Pay special attention to making sure they scrub their hands together with the soap on the fronts and backs of their hands and between their fingers.  You can have your child sing “Happy Birthday” twice to make sure they are spending the right amount of time washing. 

Have your child wash after using the restroom and before and after eating snacks and meals.  Other important times to  wash hands are after coming home from school, the playground or a friend’s house.  And don’t forget, parents and caregivers need to make sure they are washing frequently too!

2. Teach Your Child Not to Touch Their Eyes, Nose and Mouth

Teach your child not to touch their eyes and nose and mouth.  This curbs the amount of germs getting into their bodies.  You can explain how you don’t want germs getting into their bodies and why this habit is important when it comes to staying healthy.  When children do touch their eyes, nose and mouth it is a good idea to have them wash their hands so as not to spread germs to others.  It is also a good idea to teach your child how to use tissues to catch sneezes and coughs.  You can also show your child how to “catch” coughs and sneezes in the crook of their arm.  This is a great way to prevent an illness from spreading.

3. Incorporate Healthy Habits

Incorporate natural immune boosters into your child’s day. Rest, exercise and healthy diet are all important in keeping kids healthy.  Make sure you child Is getting enough rest at night and physical activity during the day.  Provide your child with a variety of healthy foods so they are giving their bodies lots of nutrients.  Don’t forget to encourage your child to drink plenty of water as well.
